Look at Them Like Family
Read transcript
I bought my best friend’s cat a laptop.
Yes, a laptop.
It was a little cardboard scratching laptop with a screen that looked like a Zoom call with other cats. And the mouse? An actual toy mouse on a string.
I saw it and thought, “Maui needs this.”
Because when you love someone, you tend to love the animals they love, too.
I’m Angie Norris, and this is Side Hustle GPS.
Today, we’re stopping in Pet Parkway to explore Pet Portraits.
For so many people, pets are family.
They buy them gifts, dress them up, plan their days around them, and do everything they can to care for them.
And this goes beyond dogs and cats.
My three children went to horse camp every summer for years. We have beautiful photographs of them riding, grooming, standing beside, and kissing the horses.
Those pictures mean the world to us.
One photograph of my daughter with a horse became a puzzle. She put it together, and we framed it in a large 11-by-14 frame.
It’s been in our living room for years. We see it every day.
That’s what a meaningful picture can become: something that keeps a connection present in your life.
My best friend has loved cats her whole life. They’re her children.
One New Year’s Day, she called to tell me one of her cats had passed away.
We’d just been together the night before. She was devastated, and I drove over immediately.
She wanted to bury her cat, so there I was, in the middle of winter, digging while she prepared to say goodbye.
I remember that because I saw how much that relationship meant to her.
Care is personal.
I’ve also had plenty of joyful moments with my friends’ pets.
My friend’s dog, Subi, has appeared in so many of my Amazon Influencer videos that I probably should have paid her!
She’s modeled sunglasses and paw booties and helped me demonstrate shampoo and conditioner.
She received plenty of treats and toys for her participation.
And every one of those pictures captures a little of her personality.
That’s where this side hustle begins.
You can help someone turn a favorite pet photo into a portrait they’ll love looking at.
A watercolor-style image. A pencil sketch. A playful illustration. Maybe a funny scene that fits that animal’s personality.
AI can help you explore backgrounds and styles, but keep the details that make the pet recognizable.
The markings. The ears. The expression.
Ask the owner what they love about that particular photo and what they want the portrait to feel like.
Then let them review it.
The portrait can stand on its own, or become the starting point for a puzzle, pillow, bag, or another keepsake.
But start with one good portrait.
Your first money move?
Ask someone you know for permission to create a sample from a clear photo of their pet.
Make two or three style options, get their feedback, and finish one.
Then offer a simple package: one pet, one chosen style, an agreed revision, and a digital file. You can add printed products as you learn what customers want.
So, whose pet could you create something special for?
